Charitable Gift Annuity

Gifts That Pay You Income

There is a way for you to support Denison and feel confident that you have dependable income in your retirement years. You can do this with a charitable gift annuity (CGA).

With a charitable gift annuity you agree to make a gift to Denison and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life. The university follows the CGA rates recommended by the American Council of Gift Annuities. After your lifetime, the remaining balance is used to support our work.

This type of donation can provide you with regular payments for life and allow Denison to further our mission. You can also qualify for a variety of tax benefits depending on how you fund your gift.

Details to Keep in Mind

  • At Denison, the minimum gift to establish a CGA is $10,000, and annuitants must be at least 60 years of age to start receiving payments.
  • CGAs may be funded with cash, publicly traded securities, and, under specific circumstances, an IRA-qualified charitable distribution (QCD). (If you choose to fund your CGA with securities, you will avoid a portion of the capital-gains tax, and any remaining capital gain will be prorated over the life/lives of the annuitants.)
  • Denison does not currently issue CGAs in Alabama, Arkansas, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington.

Process

Based on the annuitants’ birthdate, we will produce a no-obligation CGA illustration customized for you. If you determine a CGA meets your philanthropic goals, we will sign a formal agreement and accept your gift to establish your annuity. After your lifetime, you CGA’s remaining principal passes to Denison for the purpose you established in your agreement.

Income Now or Income Later

Your payments depend on your age at the time of the donation. If you are younger than 60, we recommend that you learn more about your options and download this FREE guide Deferred Gift Annuities: Plan Now, Benefit Later.

An Example of How It Works

Couple smiling Dennis, 75, and Mary, 73, want to make a contribution to Denison but they also want to ensure that they have dependable income during their retirement years. They fund a $25,000 charitable gift annuity with appreciated stock that they originally purchased for $10,000.

Based on their ages, they will receive a payment rate of 6.0%, which means that they will receive $1,500 each year for the remainder of their lives. They’re also eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $8,792* when they itemize.

*Based on a 5.2% charitable midterm federal rate. Deductions and calculations will vary depending on your personal circumstances.
