2022 CalendarDenison University is closed from Friday, Dec. 23, 2022 through Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. We will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

We understand that many donors wish to make a gift before Dec. 31, 2022, which aligns with IRS deadlines for claiming gifts as charitable contributions on your taxes. Please review the following information for details regarding Denison’s processes for making a year-end gift. Please note that the deadlines outlined below are intended only to be used as a guide to assist you with your end-of-the-year charitable giving. Please consult your tax advisor for additional guidance


Online Gifts

Receipts for online gifts are issued automatically via email once a gift has been submitted. To ensure that your online gift is receipted in the 2022 calendar year, please submit it by Dec. 31, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Phoned-In Credit Card Gifts

If you wish to make a credit card gift over the phone, please call 740-587-6292 by noon EST on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, to ensure timely processing. After noon EST on Dec. 22, 2022, please use our secure online giving form here.


Mailed-In Credit Card Gifts

To ensure your gift is processed for the 2022 tax year, it should be received by Dec. 19, 2022.

A credit card gift is considered as having been made at the moment it is processed. Therefore, mailed-in credit card gifts must be received by Denison University by Dec. 19, 2022, to ensure it is processed in the 2022 calendar year (regardless of the postmark date). Mailed-In Checks

A gift made by check and received by Denison in the mail will be processed as a 2022 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2022, AND the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2022.

If the check OR the postmark is dated after Dec. 31, 2022, the gift will be processed as a 2023 gift. (See note below, however, for checks from Individual Retirement Accounts.)

To mail a gift, please make your check payable to Denison University. If you wish to designate your gift to a specific area, please indicate it in the check’s memo line.

Individual Retirement Accounts: The IRS requirements differ if you have check-writing privileges with your Individual Retirement Account and wish to have your gift counted as a qualified charitable distribution in 2022. In those cases, your check must clear the bank and be presented to your IRA administrator in time for them to transfer funds out of your IRA account by Dec. 31, 2022. It is not enough to sign and mail the check by Dec. 31. Therefore, such IRA gifts need to arrive at Denison in time for them to clear the banking system and your administrator’s accounting system by Dec. 31, 2022. Please consult your tax advisor.


Gift of Securities

Stock Gifts & Electronic Funds Transfer Instructions

Gifts of appreciated securities and direct debits are a great way to make a charitable contribution to Denison. We will process a gift as a 2022 donation if it is received in Denison’s account by Dec. 31, 2022. Those arriving after Dec. 31, 2022, will be receipted in 2023.

If you intend to make a gift in Calendar Year 2022, please make your gift early enough to allow time for the securities to be received by Denison in advance of the Dec. 31, 2022 cut-off.
