Below you’ll find information about and options for benefiting Denison with a gift before Dec. 31, 2023. Please note Denison does not provide tax, legal, or accounting advice, and this material has been prepared for informational purposes only. Online Gifts

Receipts for gifts made through our online giving form are issued automatically via email once a gift has been completed. To ensure that your online gift is receipted for the 2023 calendar year, please complete it by 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 31, 2023. Phoned-In Credit Card Gifts

If you are looking to make a credit card gift over the phone, please call 740-587-6292 by noon EST on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, to ensure timely processing. After noon EST on Dec. 21, 2023, please complete your gift through our online giving form.

Mailed-In Credit Card Gifts

Your gift should be received by Dec. 18, 2023, to ensure it will be processed for the 2023 tax year. (Regardless of your postmark date, it must be received by Denison by Dec. 18, 2023, to ensure it’s processed in the 2023 calendar year). If you are not able to meet this deadline, please complete your gift through our online giving form.

Mailed-In Checks

A gift made by check and received by Denison in the mail will be processed as a 2023 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2023, AND the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2023. If the check OR the postmark is dated after Dec. 31, 2023, the gift will be processed as a 2024 gift. (However, see below for details related to an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) gifted from a checkbook.)

To mail your gift, please make your check payable to “Denison University”, include any applicable designation(s) in your check’s memo line, and send it to the university’s bank lockbox. The mailing address of our secure Park National Bank lockbox in nearby Mount Vernon, Ohio, is:

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions: If you have check-writing privileges from your IRA and are looking to have a related check counted as a QCD in 2023, your check must clear the bank and be presented to your IRA custodian in time for it to transfer funds out of your IRA account by Dec. 31, 2023. It is not enough to sign and mail Denison your check by Dec. 31. QCDs from IRAs with check-writing privileges need to arrive at Denison in time for them to clear the banking system and your custodian’s accounting system by Dec. 31, 2023. Please consult your IRA custodian and tax advisor for further information.

Gift of Securities

Securities with large unrealized profits (long-term capital gains) make great gift options to benefit Denison. We will process a DTC transfer as a 2023 donation if it is received in Denison’s account by Dec. 31, 2023. Transfers arriving after Dec. 31, 2023, will be receipted as a 2024 gift. Please use these transfer instructions for your gifts of securities and plan to request your securities transfer early enough to allow time for it to be received by Denison in advance of the Dec. 31, 2023, deadline.

Grants Via Donor-Advised Funds

Like with gifts via a personal check, a donor-advised fund grant sent through the mail will be processed as a 2023 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2023, AND the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2023. Please plan to make your donor-advised fund grant recommendation early enough to allow time for it to be processed by your custodian then received by Denison in advance of the Dec. 31, 2023, deadline.

Qualified Charitable Distributions Via an IRA Custodian

Like with gifts via a personal check, an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) sent through the mail from a plan custodian will be processed as a 2023 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2023, AND the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2023. Please plan to request your IRA QCD early enough to allow time for it to be processed by your plan’s custodian then received by Denison in advance of the Dec. 31, 2023, deadline. (Also remember that you cannot cash an IRA QCD check and then gift the resulting funds. Under IRS regulations, doing so will disqualify your gift from any potential QCD benefits.)
